Four Teams Brooklyn Could Potentially Look to Trade Up with on Draft Night:

The NBA Draft Lottery is just hours away, but Nets fans should be looking at what Brooklyn does after its first selection within the lottery.

With Brooklyn’s extensive list of current and future draft capital, Sean Marks is in a position to make a major move up within this year’s NBA Draft. With assets like picks 26, 27 and 36 along with Cam Johnson, the Nets are in prime position to make a push towards the end of the lottery or just outside the lottery. Below is a list of four potential trade up candidates for Brooklyn to pursue come draft night.

  • 1) Oklahoma City Thunder:

Thunder Mock Trade: Cam Johnson and future 2nd round draft capital for 15th overall pick, a future first round pick, Kenrich Williams and Ousmane Dieng.

Explanation: The Thunder are clearly lacking veteran role players as they are in a tight series against the Denver Nuggets. Cam Johnson’s decreasing annual salary makes for a perfect fit while adding much needed floor spacing to be a true competitor in the Western Conference.

  • 2) San Antonio Spurs:

Spurs Mock Trade: Cam Johnson and the 27th overall pick for Keldon Johnson, pick 14 and a future first round pick.

Explanation: The Spurs are on the brink of forming one of the leagues scariest rosters. With the addition of Johnson, the Spurs would still have the draft capital and assets to pursue a superstar level talent around Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. For Brooklyn, moving 13 spots up into the final pick of the lottery while adding a future first round pick provides the Nets with two extremely high upside prospects.

  • 3) Orlando Magic:

Magic Mock Trade: Cam Johnson and the 36th overall pick for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the 16th overall pick and a lightly protected 2028 first round pick.

Explanation: The KCP experiment did not work for Orlando who finished as a bottom three team in three-point statistics for a second consecutive season. For Orlando, adding the best floor spacer on the market while also maintaining the 25th and multiple second round picks could be a quick fix for its lack of three-point scoring options.

  • 4) Miami Heat:

Heat Mock Trade: Nets trade the 26th and 27th overall picks for the 20th overall pick and a future 1st round pick (swap or unprotected).

Explanation: The Heat messed up the opportunity of landing a lottery pick which they had protected if the pick landed between 1-14. Thanks to winning its first play-in game, the protected pick fell just one spot outside the lottery, making the 15th overall pick apart of Sam Presti’s war room of draft capital in Oklahoma City. For Miami, this move provides the Heat with a two late first round picks, allowing the Heat to add an additional prospect to its retooling roster.

Of course, a few other teams could be in play, such as Minnesota for the 17th overall pick as well as the Atlanta Hawks for the 22nd overall pick. For Brooklyn, the concept of packaging a late pick with Cam Johnson to move into the top 16 is a key concept Brooklyn needs to make a reality for the sake of its rebuild. Two top 16 picks along with two later picks allows Brooklyn to make the necessary selections in preparations for what should be seen as the final tanking season before changing the direction to star hunting.
