Key Trade Partners for Brooklyn’s Most Valuable Vets:

Sean Marks and the Brooklyn Nets we’re surprisingly quiet at this past trade deadline, refusing to move players such as Cam Johnson and Nic Claxton. With many off-season rumors beginning, here are a few potential trade packages Brooklyn could look into if they want to cash-in on maximum financial flexibility and draft capital.

Teams Potentially Interested in Cam Johnson: Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies.

Teams Potentially Interested in Nic Claxton: Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers and New Orleans Pelicans.

Three-Team Deal Sending Cam Johnson to the Detroit Pistons and Nic Claxton to the Los Angeles Lakers:

In this proposed three-team trade, Brooklyn moves on from both vets to acquire three future first round picks and FOUR expiring contracts. Overall, this deal clears roughly $112.3M over the next three seasons. For Detroit, acquiring two versatile role players could be seen as an improvement for just two expiring contracts, a first round pick and an out of rotation youthful prospect, providing Cade Cunningham with some improvements as Detroit still looks for the potential star to add alongside Cunningham. For the Lakers, acquiring two younger role players who fit the Luka Doncic timeframe and a starting caliber rim protector/lob threat for Luka is a step in the right direction in terms of reshaping the roster around Doncic. Of course, some additional draft compensation could be included from Detroit to Los Angeles if needed but overall, the framework for a Detroit, Brooklyn and Los Angeles deal makes a ton of sense.

Blockbuster Three-Team Deal Sending Nic Claxton to the Toronto Raptors:

Another potential three-team trade has Brooklyn shipping Nic Claxton to the Toronto Raptors in a blockbuster trade that also sends RJ Barrett to the Detroit Pistons. For Brooklyn, the Nets move off of Nic Claxton’s remaining contract for two high upside younger pieces in Jaden Ivey and Bobi Klintman as well as three future first round picks (Raptors 2026 top eight protected, 2028 Detroit swap rights and 2030 Detroit top five protected). For Detroit, Cade gets his second star in RJ Barrett who is coming off of a borderline All-Star season on an incredible as well as Nets forward Maxwell Lewis. For Toronto, the Jakob Poetl replacement would be acquired, giving the Raptors enough draft capital left over and potential tradeable contracts in Immanuel Quickley and Poetl to potentially form a super-team in Toronto around Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes and Nic Claxton. The Raptors had previous interest in Nic Claxton during the Kevin Durant trade saga. Something to keep an eye on as a potential blockbuster deal this off-season.

Nic Claxton to Los Angeles Lakers Trade:

A straight up deal that has been rumored for some weeks now sends Nic Claxton to the Los Angeles Lakers for two expiring contracts, a 2028 first round pick swap and a 2031 unprotected first round pick. Clearing cap space is key for Brooklyn’s future but for Los Angeles, adding Nic Claxton provides Luka Doncic with a key piece to build a long-term winner around Doncic.

Nic Claxton to the Indiana Pacers for Team Canada Jordi Fernandez Favorite:

Though some may see this as unreasonable, the Indiana Pacers are likely to lose current starting big man Myles Turner in free agency. With players such as Bennedict Mathurin and Jarace Walker struggling to find consistent minutes, moving off of one of the many guards Indiana has could be seen as a reasonable move. For Brooklyn, the Nets gain a valuable role player in Andrew Nembhard who has prior experience under head coach Jordi Fernandez during last year’s summer Olympics along with a valuable 2030 unprotected first round pick. Nembhard could be utilized for Brooklyn as a D’Angelo Russell replacement who is also just 25-years-old.

Orlando Magic Trade for Cam Johnson:

In yet another simplistic move, the Nets ship Cam Johnson to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a 2027 unprotected first round pick and a top ten protected 2029 first round pick. Orlando adds their much-needed floor spacer as the Magic have ranked bottom three in three-point shooting over the past two seasons. For Brooklyn, acquiring a veteran who likely would not impact winning next season while also adding more draft capital could be seen as a nice return for Johnson. Caldwell-Pope could be flipped within a year of acquiring him if Brooklyn does not feel his remaining two-year contract is worth holding onto.

Nets Trade Cam Johnson to the Oklahoma City Thunder:

With Oklahoma City on the verge of creating one of the youngest championship contenders, the lack of veteran role players could lead to some struggles later in the playoffs. Last year, the Thunder lost to Dallas who had many experienced role players while OKC had more youth than veteran leadership. If the Thunder fail to win the NBA Finals this season, a potential move on Cam Johnson could help put them in the driver’s seat as the league favorite to win it all. In this deal, the Nets acquire two cheap players that likely are not long-term fits but gain two incredibly valuable future first round picks (Utah 2026 top eight protected and Dallas 2028 swap rights).

Cam Johnson to Memphis Grizzlies Trade:

In a last resort effort to potentially win now with Ja Morant, Brooklyn would trade Cam Johnson to the Memphis Grizzlies the Ja Morant era in Memphis could be coming to a close by next year. For Memphis, they can roll out a starting five that consists of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Cam Johnson, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Zach Edey, forming one of the league’s best starting units. For Brooklyn, Sean Marks would be saving just under $6 million in cap space over the next two seasons while also adding an unprotected 2028 first round pick which could hold some significant value if and when Ja Morant eventually departs from Memphis.

Of course, all trades are opinion based, specifically based on certain team’s playoff outcomes, window to win now and previous rumors. Feel free to comment your possible Nets off-season trade ideas and make sure to subscribe so you never miss an article!
